Sprint Wholesale Signaling System 7SM (SS7) provides SS7 messaging on voice calls sent from your switch to the Sprint network for improved service efficiencies and reduced signaling costs. Use this product to expand SS7 service outside your region — and even terminate globally — with fast call setup and messaging. The Sprint SS7 backbone offers multiple signal transfer points (STPs) for full redundancy, and two international Sprint STPs support access to C7 international standards throughout the world.

The SS7 signaling protocol utilizes an overlay, out-of-band messaging network to perform call processing and network control functions for multiple voice channels over a single signaling channel. Out-of-band signaling frees the entire bandwidth of voice facilities for the competitive advantage of improved network utilization.

Sprint Wholesale SS7 is available for the following Sprint Wholesale products:

The Sprint Wholesale SS7 services are provided over a digital, fiber-optic backbone network using a digital switching architecture and supported by sophisticated management control systems. These elements provide a highly reliable and redundant network. The design of the Sprint network enables survivability at the backbone or transmission level and the service level.

Applications

For every long-distance call, the Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) sends call information to the interexchange carrier (IXC). Sprint uses this information to verify if the terminating location is available and to establish a path for the call. Once the call is answered, SS7 messaging starts tracking for billing and monitors call status. When the called party hangs up, the SS7 message ends the billing tracking and disconnects the call.
