Product Details
Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is a standards-based,
broadband technology that provides a single network
solution that integrates voice, data and video traffic
over a single transmission facility. ATM is particularly
well suited for high-speed, high-performance applications.
ATM is a switching technology, as opposed to a physical
connection. Through ATM, the information is segmented
into fixed-length cells for transmission. These cells
are interspersed at pre-determined time intervals, which
allows the quick response times for bursty data traffic,
as well as the low delay needed for conversations.
Sprint ATM Service provides an economical, high-performance
alternative to leasing private lines to meet the constantly
growing need for network capacity. With ATM, companies
can build "virtual" networks without committing to many
of the costs and constraints of private lines. At the
same time, because it integrates smoothly with existing
network technologies - such as X.25, frame relay, Ethernet
and transmission control protocol/Internet protocol
(TCP/IP) - ATM allows a single network to accommodate
all traffic types that typically would be handled by
separate networks.
Sprint offers service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure
the quality of ATM service is well-defined for the following
categories:
- Port availability
- Permanent virtual circuit (PVC) delay
- Data delivery
In addition, you can choose among three categories
of service for the bandwidth-intensive applications
your business uses:
- Constant bit rate (CBR) - best suited for applications
that require constant network bandwidth with minimal
delay and need to be given priority within the network
such as uncompressed voice and video transmissions.
- Variable bit rate (VBR) - good for burst data applications
such as LAN interconnect, computer-aided design /
computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and multimedia.
- Unspecified bit rate (UBR) - best suited for communication
application in which timing of delivered data is not
critical such as file transfer, e-mail, LAN-to-LAN
communications and voicemail.
With Sprint ATM Service, access options begin at DS1.
Businesses can implement an ATM network at these speeds:
- 3 Mbps
- 6 Mbps
- 9 Mbps
- 12 Mbps
- DS3
- OC-3
Permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) are available ranging
from 64 kbps to 155 Mbps.
